University Council

The University Council is the supervisory body of our university and consists of nine members. The external members represent socially relevant areas, while the four internal members represent the various status groups at our university. They fulfil supervisory tasks and advise the university strategically. The external members also act as a bridge to society. The members provide impetus and encouraging feedback and see themselves as critical friends of the entire university.

The University Council should advise and support the university as a whole and steer it within the framework of legal requirements. The expertise and diverse background experience of its members should enable and promote social connections and the desired opening of the university to the outside world.

Above all, the University Council is to take over supervisory functions previously held by the state vis-à-vis the Rectorate. It has a leading role in the election of the rector and the chancellor.

External members in particular are called upon to see themselves as committed advocates of their university and to act as positive multipliers in the public eye. This is the external perspective. From an internal perspective, the external members have the task of persuading the members of the university to face up to the social meaningfulness and significance of their actions and to avoid compromises at the lowest denominator.

With its diverse range of study programmes relevant to the entire educational biography, its research spectrum and the commitment of teachers and students across disciplinary boundaries, e.g. in the areas of democracy education, sustainability and health, Heidelberg University of Education is facing particularly critical social and educational policy challenges. Due to the many interfaces with my own research, e.g. on the development of linguistic and multilingual skills and the associated educational consequences, I consider it a privilege to accompany the dynamics of university design as a member of the University Council

Prof. em. Dr Rosemarie Tracy, Senior Professor at the University of Mannheim

I have come to know the PH Heidelberg as a very agile university. I am delighted to be able to contribute my knowledge and experience to such an important body as its University Council. My intention is to contribute to making the education system more customised to the requirements of today and tomorrow.

Dr Ulrike Freundlieb, Mayor for Education, Youth and Health of the City of Mannheim (ret.)

As head of the city's Office for Equal Opportunities, I came to know the Heidelberg University of Education as a prudent player and partner for dealing with relevant and challenging upheavals. It does full justice to its task of shaping a living educational practice of teachers that pursues indispensable goals for the development ability of future generations in two respects: the biographical learning ability and resilience of individuals as well as the development abilities, conflict and problem-solving skills of an entire society against the backdrop of constantly changing challenges in very different contexts.

It is an honour for me to be able to make a contribution to shaping the many, sometimes incompatible expectations and challenges.
