Bachelor of Arts in Prevention and Health Promotion

On this page we present a short overview of the bachelor’s programme “prevention and health promotion”, containing information about the application process, the requirements and a summary of each semester. Further information on the programme can be found on our German website or at our administrative office. An English module manual and examination regulations are currently in progress.

Students can enrol to the Bachelor of Arts “prevention and health promotion” at Heidelberg University of Education every winter semester. In each semester we have a capacity of up to 45 students. The first semester (winter semester) starts on the 1st of October and ends on the 31st of March. The second semester (summer semester) starts on the 1st of April and ends on the 30th of September. Exams always take place in the end of January or the beginning of February in winter semester and in the end of July or the beginning of August in summer semester.

The deadlines for application differ from the 31st of May (graduation in previous year) or the 15th of June (graduation in same year). The university has its own selection procedure to allocate study places consisting of a point system which converts the applicant's graduation certificate into several points and then evaluates the applicant's related practical experience.

Application requirements for exchange students:

  • Applicants require a general or special school-leaving qualification
  • Particularly competent candidates who completed vocational and extensive further training and acquired at least four years of work experience may also be accepted, if their training is related to the field of prevention and health promotion
  • The language level requirement in German is B1



  • Our bachelor’s programme is divided into 30 ECTS per semester which represents the provided performance.


Semester overview:

Semester 1: During the first semester students get an introduction and overview of the topics of health promotion and prevention. They learn about public health sciences and health education. Furthermore, basics about scientific writing and studying will be taught.

Semester 2: This semester will give the students an understanding of the basics in medical and epidemiological research, intervention planning, empirical social research methods (quantitative and qualitative), insights into the professional fields of health promotion and prevention.

Semester 3: In semester three our students are able to choose one out of three major topics: physical activity, nutrition or stress (management). Furthermore, project management is a fixed subject on the curriculum.

Semester 4: Topics are health in communities, workplace health and workplace health management as well as a free topic on top that can be chosen from any other professional field.

Semester 5: In semester five students are supposed to perform an internship over at least 90 days. The aim is to discover more about the professional field and collect first practical experiences. These have to be reflected in a report at the end of the semester. The internship is supervised within regular supervision sessions.

Semester 6: In the last semester current developments of public health (nationally and internationally) will be in focus. Furthermore, the students are supposed to write their bachelor thesis.
