HSE: Digital Autumn School (1/2)

A proposal on the subject "teaching in a globalised, diverse, digital world". An application is necessary.

School teachers play a key role not only for larger educational processes, but also for individual educational success within our complex and globalised digital world. In the Digital Autumn School, offered by the Heidelberg School of Education, the student participants seek to explore the challenges, benefits and relevancy of the scholarly concept of transculturality for future teachers in countries all over the world in order to fulfil this role. Within the context of teacher education, applying a transcultural perspective may help reconsider the categories of race/ethnicity, gender, class or age; it questions such constructs as ‘the other’ or ‘normal’; it acknowledges interconnectedness and suggests a relational approach to linguistic, social, economic, and political aspects of our everyday and (future) professional lives. Thus, the participants aim to find out whether and in what respect transculturality may allow for a widening of perspectives and a self-reflexive shift.

The essential question to be discussed and debated by the participants of this year’s Autumn School is: What does transculturality mean to me as a future teacher?

Drawing on the expertise of school teachers and international scholars from a wide range of fields such as Educational Studies, Anthropology, Political Science and Language Studies, the participants of this Autumn School will discuss the concept of transculturality and consider its relevance for their profession as future school teachers.

The event is open to student participants enrolled in teacher training programmes and will take place online from October 21st to 23rd and from October 28th to 30th. An application by e-mail indicating your motivation for participation as well as details about your current study programme is necessary until September 20th 2020.
