In this presentation, organized by the Heidelberg School of Education (HSE), the DAAD guest lecturers Dr Emma Kostiainen and Dr Matti Rautiainen from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) introduce the Keljonkangas Comprehensive School in Jyväskylä, which started its operations in August 2021. In addition to classrooms for students in grades 5 to 9, the building also houses the Keljonkangas Library and a new youth space for the area. The design of the school building is based on co-teaching and team-teaching approaches. The school is exceptional in many ways. Its story began six years ago, when the educational director of Jyväskylä City decided to build a school for the future and contributed to its concept. Schools’ teachers played a central role in the participatory planning process. The speakers Emma Kostiainen and Matti Rautiainen, who have have long been associated with Heidelberg University of Education through joint research into innovative schools and learning environments in Finland and Germany, have been helping to shape the school building and later the school's operating culture since 2018.
Their lecture "The School for the Future in Finland - The case of Keljonkangas Comprehensive School" will take place on Thursday, 25th April 2024 at 4:30 p.m. in the conference room of the HSE (Building 4330, Voßstraße 2, 69115 Heidelberg/Germany). Student teachers, lecturers and teaching staff as well as all those interested in school and teaching development and international cooperation are cordially invited to a lively exchange. The event will be held in English.

The HSE was founded in 2015 as a joint cross-university institution of Heidelberg University of Education and Heidelberg University. It represents the institutional, strategic and conceptual center of cooperative teacher education in Heidelberg.
