The Institute of Educational Science conducts theoretical and empirical research into education and upbringing in a variety of thematic contexts and qualifies people for educational and extracurricular fields of action.
The Institute of Educational Science at the Heidelberg University of Education sees itself as a central centre for the academic study of education and upbringing in their historical, social, cultural and institutional contexts. The focus is on the theory, empiricism and practice of educational action in various fields of activity - from early childhood, school and university to extracurricular education and further education.
The Institute's research and teaching activities focus on current social challenges such as inclusion, digitalisation, migration, educational equality and professionalisation in pedagogical professions. We combine well-founded theoretical reflection with empirical research and practice-orientated teaching. The members of the Institute work on an interdisciplinary basis and cooperate closely with national and international partner institutions.
The Institute is organised into various subject areas that deal with central educational science issues - including general educational science, school pedagogy, empirical educational research, migration pedagogy and humanistic pedagogy. The wide range of courses on offer are aimed at students on teacher training courses at primary and lower secondary level, special education and Master's programmes in educational science. Our aim is to accompany and support prospective educators on their path to responsible, reflective, research-based and professional behaviour.
