Theatre education offers a wide range of theatre groups. Whether you prefer to perform on stage, work behind the scenes or are interested in media production - you will find the right group for you here. From classic theatre plays to experimental productions, everything is on offer. The award-winning theatre groups at the PH Heidelberg offer you the opportunity to live out your creativity, meet new people and create unforgettable theatre experiences.
The traditional theatre group has existed at the university for over 40 years and is therefore older than the degree programme itself. Their award-winning productions are an integral part of the degree programme, but are also open to students of all subjects at the PH and university. The group is supported and guided by professional theatre and art professionals from the region. Rehearsals for a project take place over two semesters: every October, the group comes together and works for nine months in the areas of acting, stage, costume, make-up, technology and PR on a full-length performance in June.

The English Drama Group was founded in 2018 with the purpose of staging English language plays with foreign language learners in the original version. In this way, the EDG aims to open up alternative approaches to foreign language learning and to foster intercultural exchange and understanding. The EDG stages immersive, site-specific productions in locations of special interest in the Heidelberg region. Its award winning projects form part of the Drama Course of the University of Education while at the same time being open to all students of all subjects enrolled at both the PH and the University of Heidelberg and is SPECIFICALLY aimed at students who have found learning a foreign language challenging or even off-putting.

At the end of the course (module 4), students have the opportunity to take part in a children's theatre production. Here, students come together in small groups to independently create a stage version of a children's picture book, stage it and finally perform it in front of primary school classes. All the skills learnt on the course are put to use: set design, costume and make-up design, lighting and sound engineering, directing and acting. A well-rounded degree programme that also maintains intensive contact with primary schools in the immediate vicinity.
Nothing excites young people more than the medium of film with its various applications in digital media and on social media platforms. This is why film is the ideal starting point for theatre education when working with young people. In a specially designed seminar, students produce a short film. The focus here is on the question of how the approaches and methods of theatre can be transferred to film.
Various theatre makers from England are also integrated into the project during the rehearsal process. With the special #connect award, the BDAT honours productions that demonstrate the unifying power that theatre can have during the coronavirus pandemic. The jury says: "The production's use of foreign languages, its inclusion of current developments and its cross-border collaboration symbolise in a special way what unites in times of division."
