The Graduate School supports PhD students in funding their research. On this page, you will find important information on applying for grants and on financial support available to PhD students and postdocs.
Removing barriers for women* in academia is a key priority for Heidelberg University of Education. You will find various programmes and initiatives here, including PHÖNIX – a support programme for women in academia, the Margarete von Wrangell Junior Professorship Programme, the Office for Gender Equality’s Young Female Researchers* Prize, which is awarded every two years, and the Annelie Wellensiek Prize for academic theses.
Once again this year, the ‘Baden-Württemberg Foundation’s Elite Programme for Postdoctoral Researchers’ is being advertised for outstanding early-career researchers.
Funding amount and duration: Funding from the Foundation is limited to three years and may amount to up to €200,000 in individual cases (to cover staff costs, travel, materials and, where applicable, capital expenditure). Funding for the postdoc’s own position cannot be applied for. Universities must contribute at least 10 per cent of the project costs applied for.
Funding rate: In 2026, the Baden-Württemberg Foundation will once again admit up to 12 new postdoctoral researchers to the elite programme.
Internal deadline for submitting an application: 3 April 2026 (please submit documents via the relevant faculty and forward them to the Secretariat of the Pro-Rectors by the deadline).

Decision on which application to forward: Heidelberg University of Education may submit a maximum of one application. The Rectorate will decide which application is to be forwarded.
