Are you unable to take part in the regular semester programme for certain reasons? Then you can apply for a leave of absence. During a semester of leave of absence, you retain your study place and student status, but are generally unable to attend courses or take examinations. You can find everything you need to know about reasons, deadlines and how to apply here.

Proof: Confirmation from the International Office or a copy of the internship contract and, if applicable, the flight ticket/booking confirmation. If you are studying a foreign language, travelling to a country with this language and the semester you are applying for is the first semester of leave due to a stay abroad, you do not need any proof!

In addition, please always submit the form "Details of your stay abroad":

Proof: Copy of the employment contract. The contract must show at least 20 hours per week, for teachers at least 13 teaching hours.

Proof: Copy of the child's birth certificate and a registration certificate. This reason is valid until the child is 12 years old.

Proof: Copy of the internship or employment contract. This internship is prescribed in the examination regulations and serves the purpose of the degree programme. Reason for leave of absence currently only applies to the Bachelor's degree programme in Health Promotion.

Proof: Medical certificate stating that you are unable to study in the semester in question. A diagnosis does not have to be shown.

Proof: Copy of the mother's passport showing her own name and the expected date of birth of the child, or a copy of the birth certificate and a registration certificate. This reason is valid until the child is 3 years old.

Proof: Copy of the notification of the care level, which also states the appointment as a carer, and a written declaration of the family relationship (close relative within the meaning of Section 7 of the Caregiver Leave Act). Applies to care within the meaning of §§ 14 and 15 of the Eleventh Social Security Code.

If you wish to apply for a semester of leave for reasons other than those listed above, please provide detailed reasons in a separate letter. In this case, we recommend that you consult the Office of Student Affairs before applying and, if necessary, seek counselling.

You can apply for a leave of absence via the university's CAMPUS portal. You need a valid reason for a leave of absence. You must upload suitable evidence for this in the online application.

Once your application has been checked and approved by the Student Administration Office, you will receive an email informing you of the change to your application status. You can then retrieve the relevant notifications and certificates in the CAMPUS portal.

You can always apply for a semester of leave via the CAMPUS portal by the start of the lecture period at the latest (statutory deadline).

The approval of the semester of leave does not replace re-registration!
The semester of leave of absence can be applied for, approved and reserved independently of re-registration for the next semester. The leave of absence only comes into effect as soon as re-registration has taken place.

We also recommend that you check with the relevant institutions (e.g. BAföG, employment, private health insurance) beforehand to find out whether the leave of absence will affect the respective benefits.

During a semester of leave, you are not entitled to attend courses, use university facilities (with the exception of the library) or take module examinations (this also includes the Bachelor's or Master's thesis). Internships during the lecture-free period are exempt from this regulation.

Exception for leave of absence due to maternity/parental leave: You are exempt from the restrictions and can use university facilities, attend courses and take examinations.

During the semester of leave, you are still enrolled as a student and can take advantage of the usual benefits (e.g. public transport, services of the Studierendenwerk, discounts at public and private institutions). Therefore, the semester fee must also be paid during the semester of leave when re-registering.

For Master's degree programmes subject to tuition fees, however, no tuition fees are charged during the semester of leave.
