Do you want to play an active role in shaping the future? In the Master's in Digital Education for Sustainable Development (DBNE), you will combine two key topics of our time: sustainability and digitalisation.
You will learn how modern formats - from e-learning and video production to AR and VR applications - can communicate the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a lively way.
In addition to current research, you will gain valuable practical experience in projects, field exercises and a professional internship. In this way, you will build the basis for your own specialisation and prepare yourself for responsible tasks in education, research, business or non-profit organisations.
The prerequisite for admission is a qualified university degree (at least 6 semesters) with
- knowledge of sustainability science (at least 6 ECTS) and
- basic methodological knowledge (9 ECTS).
If the Bachelor's degree is not yet available at the time of application, admission to the programme can still be applied for with proof of at least 150 ECTS.
The M.A. Digital Education for Sustainable Development (DBNE) programme combines two key topics for the future: Digitalisation and sustainability.
Digital learning formats are rapidly growing in importance in many areas of education. The same applies to education for sustainable development (ESD) to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).
As a graduate of the degree programme, you will be able to communicate the issues and challenges of sustainable development to different target groups through modern, technologically supported educational programmes. To this end, you will be able to develop, design, research and provide evidence-based support for innovative concepts of digital education for sustainable development in all areas of education, in municipal institutions or companies.
In addition to teaching sustainability-related concepts, current theories and research methods, the Master's degree programme builds a bridge to practical orientation:
Non-university field exercises, a professional internship lasting several weeks and scientifically supervised projects lay the foundation for students' own practical and thus application-orientated exploration and create possible starting points for the Master's thesis that concludes the course.
The degree programme can be roughly divided into 3 areas.
The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) subject block teaches the theoretical and practical basics of ESD. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in projects with practice partners and a professional internship.
In the e-learning and media education subject block, you will acquire media pedagogical and media didactic skills and learn how to design e-learning programmes. Content on media production and practice builds on this solid foundation.
The Interdisciplinary Foundations thematic block comprises a complementary study programme designed to broaden your previous specialist perspective in the context of sustainability. In the Environmental Psychology module, you will focus on the psychological foundations of sustainable development. Courses on research methods prepare you for the Master's thesis, in which you will independently work on a research question from the subject areas of the degree programme using scientific methods.
Standard period of study: 4 semesters
The degree programme comprises 120 credit points. One credit point corresponds to around 30 hours of student work (attendance, preparation and follow-up work, self-study, examination).
So that you can apply the theoretical principles from your degree programme directly in practice, you will complete a professional internship (210 hours) during your studies, which you can either complete alongside your studies during the semester or full-time during the lecture-free period. You will gain valuable practical experience in school or extracurricular educational institutions, municipal or supra-regional official institutions or even companies. Of course, you can also do this abroad.
The degree programme offers you the opportunity to integrate a stay abroad into your studies - either via an exchange programme or self-organised. If you would like to venture beyond Germany, you can study abroad for one or two semesters at a university or complete an internship, for example.
The International Office can provide you with information and advice on the various options and scholarship programmes.
To the International Office
You will graduate with the academic degree "Master of Arts (M. A.)". This degree opens up a wide range of fields of activity for you, ranging from extracurricular educational institutions and local authorities to teaching sustainable development issues as part of personnel development in companies.
In the education sector, potential employers include extracurricular ESD learning locations such as environmental centres, museums, national parks, biosphere reserves and geoparks as well as international cooperation actors and non-governmental organisations.
In municipalities, environmental protection departments or sustainability departments in particular, including agenda offices, are possible targets, as are positions as sustainability officers, for example to create development strategies to promote (ESD) while taking into account municipal potential or to establish and expand municipal networks to promote ESD.
There are also numerous conceivable employment options for graduates of the degree programme in commercial enterprises. Employment is conceivable at several levels: as a representative sustainability officer or officer for (digital) (further) education, or more operationally in sustainability management or in human resources departments.
How about Democracy Education, Migration and Diversity or Intercultural Learning Support? These are just three examples of the attractive additional qualifications that you can acquire as a prospective education expert. You usually complete these additional qualifications with a certificate.
