M. A. E-Learning and Media Education

Video production, AI, didactics and design - all in one Master's programme? On the Master's in E-Learning and Media Education (ELMEB for short), you will learn how to design, produce and evaluate educational media and digital learning environments. The Master's programme offers you an exciting mix of research and practical application, including in projects with partners from the education sector or business. It also covers media development and virtual education.

Germany needs experts to support educational institutions in the digital transformation. With your visions and media expertise, you can help to make learning processes more modern, accessible and sustainable.

During your studies, you will immerse yourself in current digital developments: You will learn to work with AI, coding, robotics and immersive media such as AR/VR - and develop your own concepts that advance digital education in practice.

You will work on two projects with partners from business or education. You will apply your knowledge in real-life contexts, develop innovative solutions and gain valuable practical experience. Study full-time or part-time: the Master's in E-Learning and Media Education is also available as a part-time programme!

The Master's in E-Learning and Media Education opens up a wide range of career opportunities: in e-learning agencies, HR departments, media companies or educational institutions. A doctorate is also possible - so career paths in practice, research and science are open to you.

The prerequisite for admission is a qualified university degree - at least 6 semesters
(e.g. state examination for all teaching qualifications, Bachelor's degree or a comparable qualification).

If the university degree is not yet available at the time of application, admission can still be applied for if the programme comprises at least 150 ECTS.

You can easily apply via the online application portal. Simply upload the required documents there.

The degree programme is offered in the summer semester .

  • Application period for the summer semester: 15 November - 15 March

The degree programme is admission-free. There is no selection procedure and therefore no NC(numerus clausus). Anyone who fulfils the admission requirements (see above) will be admitted to the degree programme.

The semester fee currently totals 163.60 euros and is payable on enrolment. The amount is due again each semester on re-enrolment.

In addition, tuition fees are payable for the M.A. E-Learning and Media Education:

  • Full-time programme: 700.00 euros/semester
  • Part-time programme: 450.00 Euro/semester

I think the combination of theoretical basics and practical tools and projects is ideal. It was also great to see the different professional and academic backgrounds that my fellow students brought to the programme.

As part of the GaLa-Q project at LVG, the research project of the Elmeb degree programme supported us in the evaluation of a digital learning application for a blended learning scenario. The application follows a gamified approach and, in the best case scenario, should motivate participants in the training programme to engage with the content-related issues. The research project gives us the opportunity to make the learning application and ultimately the GaLa-Q training programme at the LVG more appealing and accessible to participants. This is particularly important to us in view of the special target group, which tends to have a low digital affinity. Without the research project, an evaluation in the development phase would not have been possible due to time constraints.

The practical project in the third semester was a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the design and implementation of digital learning formats during my studies. I benefited greatly from this when I started my career as an author in an e-learning agency.

Yannick Fella, Alumnus

Working with the students from the ELMEB degree programme as part of the practical project has always been a great experience for us! It's exciting to see how our occupational health and safety topics come to life in a wide variety of e-learning/media formats. We benefit from the students' expertise in media didactics and production and can enrich our training programme through this cooperation.

In the Master's in E-Learning and Media Education, you will learn to design digital educational programmes in a professional and creative way - a key skill in an increasingly digitalised society. Traditional media such as print, TV and radio are now merging with interactive, digital learning formats. This results in new types of educational programmes that you can plan, implement and evaluate professionally. You will acquire in-depth knowledge of media didactics, media education, media research, media aesthetics, media production and media history. You will combine media theory perspectives with practical design expertise in audiovisual and digital media design and computer science. In this way, you will develop an interdisciplinary profile that brings together theory and application.
At the end of your degree programme, you will be able to produce traditional audiovisual educational media, design web-based learning environments and implement media-supported training and further education measures and projects. You will design educational programmes that not only work technically, but are also didactically convincing. You will be ideally equipped to play an active role in shaping the future of learning and to set sustainable impulses in educational institutions, organisations and companies. A wide range of career prospects are open to you - from digital education development and e-learning projects in companies to media education counselling.

The Master's degree programme in E-Learning and Media Education teaches the following content in several modules:

  • Fundamentals of media didactics and education
  • Influencing factors in e-learning and learning with educational media
  • Media production and practice
  • Conception of educational media and e-learning environments
  • Legal, media pedagogical and technological aspects of educational media
  • Topics, fields of action and tasks of media education and pedagogy
  • Current topics of academic discussions

The degree programme is strongly project-oriented and uses the teaching-learning approach of research-based learning in several modules. This ensures not only a high academic standard, but also the application of the programme content. You benefit from the close connection between theoretical knowledge and its transfer into practice. In two project assignments, you will learn to work on an interdisciplinary research or practice-related task in individual or group work. In the final Master's thesis, you will work on a challenging problem from the subject area of the degree programme using scientific methods and, if applicable, on the basis of an independently created media production.

Standard period of study: 4 semesters on the full-time programme, 7 semesters on the part-time programme

The degree programme comprises 120 credit points. One credit point corresponds to around 30 hours of student work (attendance, preparation and follow-up work, self-study, examination).

Due to the two individually selectable subjects, many different combinations are possible. For this reason, there is also a module handbook tailored to the respective subject combination, which contains the respective study and examination regulations. You can find the module handbook for your personal combination of subjects at ISI, the Individual Study Information.

The practical project takes place in cooperation with external partners or with partners at Heidelberg University of Education. You will independently carry out an application-related media project, from planning to production/application. To do this, you must apply the theoretical and practical media knowledge gained from the modules you have completed so far.

The degree programme offers you the opportunity to integrate a stay abroad into your studies - either via an exchange programme or self-organised. If you would like to venture beyond Germany, you can study abroad for a semester at a university, for example.

The International Office can provide you with information and advice on the various options and scholarship programmes.
