From a social and economic perspective, education is an important and sustainable resource. The Master's degree programme in Educational Sciences is therefore aimed at (future) education specialists who wish to gain (further) qualifications at a high academic level in order to successfully meet the demands of a dynamically changing education market.

You will acquire both comprehensive and specialised (academic) knowledge, skills and abilities in various areas of educational science and in particular in one of the chosen study profiles. A wide range of opportunities await you, e.g. management positions in social work or adult education, management positions in educational institutions or companies or an academic career (e.g. doctorate).

In the two profiles, two modules (PM 1 and PM 2) teach profile-specific knowledge and skills. You can then apply these in a separate module (PM 3) in the third semester on a project basis - alternatively, this semester can be used for a study visit abroad.

The prerequisite for admission is a qualified university degree - at least 6 semesters

If the Bachelor's degree is not yet available at the time of application, admission can still be applied for with proof of at least 150 ECTS.

You can easily apply via the online application portal. Simply upload the required documents there.

From a social and economic perspective, education is an important and sustainable resource.
The M.A. in Educational Sciences (BIWI for short) allows you to gain further qualifications at a high academic level in order to successfully meet the demands of a dynamically changing education market. You can build on the PHHD's excellence in extracurricular fields such as educational science and early childhood and elementary education.

You will acquire in-depth and research-based knowledge in the educational sciences and learn to systematically analyse and critically reflect on complex scientific issues and develop theory-based solutions. The degree programme thus strengthens your ability to combine specialist knowledge and strategic action and apply it in practice.

Through the strong research and practical references, you will develop important self-reflective, interpersonal, social and communicative skills and distinguish yourself as an educational expert for the non-school sector. This opens up a wide range of professional fields and educational contexts:

For example, you will qualify for research and teaching, evaluation and organisation, development and management in educational areas such as adult or elementary education, in publishing houses or scientific institutions.

The Master's in Educational Sciences comprises a core area of educational science and two profiles that allow you to set individual specialisations. A project semester or semester abroad and the Master's thesis round off the programme.

The core area of educational science covers basic specialist knowledge and skills in the areas of educational theory, research methods, organisational development and evaluation and intervention research.

Individual specialisation is possible via two profiles:

  • Profile 1: Extracurricular education in the context of social heterogeneity
This profile focuses on education in non-formal extracurricular fields of work in child, youth and adult education and teaches concepts for designing teaching, learning and counselling programmes in heterogeneous societies.
  • Profile 2: Educational processes in early childhood and elementary education
This profile focuses on the development of pedagogical concepts in pre-school educational institutions and deals with developmental psychology, educational processes in childhood and professional skills.

You will spend one semester working on a practical or research-related topic in an educational context of your choice - a semester abroad is also possible.

In the Master's thesis, you will deal academically with a topic from your chosen profile or the core area.

Standard period of study: 4 semesters

The programme comprises 120 credit points. One credit point corresponds to around 30 hours of student work (attendance, preparation and follow-up work, self-study, examination).

In the two profiles, profile-specific knowledge and skills are taught in two modules (PM 1 and PM 2). You can then apply these in your own project-based module (PM 3) in the third semester. Alternatively, you can use this semester for a study visit abroad.

As part of the project semester (PM 3), which can be research-, development- or practice-related, you will actively participate in a field of work or practice of your choice (e.g. educational institution, after-school care centre, day-care centre, sponsoring association, university, research institute, vocational school, educational policy institution, school administration, ministry, advisory institution) in Germany or abroad.

Stays abroad as part of the Master's in Educational Sciences are desired and are supported and promoted by the PH Heidelberg as part of its internationalisation strategy. In the case of a semester abroad, profile-specific content (acquired at a foreign university or other institution abroad) must be proven.

The International Office can provide you with information and advice on the various options and scholarship programmes.
