As a graduate or student of the Master of Education with the profile line Teaching Qualification Secondary Level I, Grammar School or Special Education, you have the opportunity to study an extension subject of Secondary Level I in a supplementary Master's degree programme. You can choose from the subjects offered in the Secondary Level I Teacher Training profile and study the subject-specific and didactic components of this subject.
This supplementary Master's degree programme leads to a further academic qualification and focuses on educational processes in schools. By completing the programme, you will acquire the academic qualification to teach the subject you have studied for the secondary level I teaching degree.
- Completion of the Master of Education degree programme in the Teaching Qualification for Secondary Level I, Teaching Qualification for Grammar School or Teaching Qualification for Special Needs Education or completion of an equivalent teaching-related degree programme or
- current enrolment in a Master's degree programme related to teaching at Heidelberg University of Education or Heidelberg University
- existing examination entitlement in the desired subject
- subject-specific requirements (entrance examination for art and sport or letter of motivation for the subject of music; language skills if German and English are chosen)

You can take up an extension subject in the Master of Education profile line Secondary Level I Teacher Training in the summer and winter semesters. A separate application is not required.
To enrol, submit the application for enrolment directly to the
Summer semester: 01 - 31 March
Winter semester: 01 - 30 September
The standard period of study, including all compulsory coursework and examinations and the completion of the Master's thesis, is 4 semesters.
New from summer semester 2024: It is also possible to graduate with a certificate instead of a Master's thesis. Further information can be found below.
The scope of study is 90 credit points.
If you have successfully completed a subject with a different scope related to the teaching degree for secondary level I, its contents will be recognised for the study of a supplementary extension subject in the Master of Education profile line Teaching degree for secondary level I with the same subject focus.
The study of an extension subject in the Master of Education profile line Teaching Qualification Secondary Level I is carried out in accordance with the regulations of the respective module handbooks of the Bachelor's degree programme in Secondary Education and the Master of Education profile line Teaching Qualification Secondary Level I.

In accordance with the Framework Ordinance for Teacher Training Programmes, you will acquire the academic qualification to teach the studied subject for the teaching profession at lower secondary level.
