Philosophie / Ethik

In our studies of philosophy and ethics, we explore fundamental questions concerning human existence, thought and action. Through dialogue with philosophy throughout history and in the present day, we discuss various approaches to these questions, explore ways of addressing them, and hone our capacity for critical reflection. Of central importance here is also the integration of subject-specific content – particularly practical philosophy – with questions of philosophical and ethical education, which we address with particular regard to the relevant educational contexts of the degree programmes for teaching at lower secondary level and for special educational needs.

Studying Philosophy / Ethics as an optional subject

Since 2019, it has been possible to study Ethics for Lower Secondary Level as an additional subject at Heidelberg University of Education. The programme is also aimed at teachers who are already working in schools and can be undertaken on a part-time basis alongside work.

The programme, which complements a Master of Education or an equivalent teacher training degree, leads to a further academic qualification or certificate, thereby conferring the academic competence required to teach Ethics .

The standard duration of study is four semesters.

Students may commence the programme in either the winter or summer semester.

A Master’s thesis is only required if ethics is to be one of the two subjects chosen during pre-service teacher training.

Our student council consists of dedicated students of Philosophy and Ethics. It works closely with the department’s academic staff and represents students’ perspectives on various issues relating to their studies.
