The following section outlines the application process, the admission criteria and organisational information for a semester abroad at Heidelberg University of Education. This information provides an overview of the individual steps, from nomination by your home university through to applying to Heidelberg University of Education.

Once you have decided to spend a semester abroad at Heidelberg University of Education, you should contact the International Office at your home university. There, you can discuss your planned course of study and your desired period of stay.

Nomination for a study semester is made by the International Office at your home university via email to Heidelberg University of Education.

Note for Erasmus+ students: Nomination by your home university can be carried out via the EWP dashboard. Please also send an additional email confirming that the nomination has been made.

Following nomination by their home university, visiting students will receive an application form from the International Office to apply for a place at Heidelberg University of Education. This form requires them to provide all personal details relevant to their stay. In addition, basic information about their course of study and the desired period of stay (winter or summer semester) is requested. The form must be completed in full and returned within the specified application deadlines.

Winter semester: 15 June
Summer semester: 1 December

You can apply for a place in a student hall of residence at the same time using the application form. However, the International Office cannot guarantee that a room will be allocated, and there is no entitlement to a specific room category.

Acceptance of a hall of residence place is binding. Any costs arising from the non-acceptance of a room allocated by the Office must be borne by the student. Any special requirements regarding the hall of residence room must be specified at the time of booking. The Heidelberg Student Services Organisation (Studierendenwerk Heidelberg) usually sends the tenancy agreement one month before the start of the semester.

Once the application has been received, the International Office will respond. Processing may take up to three weeks. Subsequently, the further steps regarding your study stay in Heidelberg will be coordinated and supported.

  • English language proficiency (B2) for an exchange programme in the subject of English

Visiting students have certain obligations as part of an approved study visit. These relate to both organisational procedures and academic requirements.

  • Complete the (online) Learning Agreement
    → Agree on courses with your home university and Heidelberg University of Education
  • Take out health insurance or have your cover checked
    → Guidance is available from the International Office at Heidelberg University of Education
  • Apply for a visa
    → A visa may be required for stays abroad outside the EU
  • Arrangehall of residence / accommodation

  • Orientation phase
    → Support from mentors
    → Arrival in Heidelberg and moving into the hall of residence
    → Opening a German bank account, if necessary
  • Organisation of studies
    → Enrolment at Heidelberg University of Education
    → Attending ‘ ’ induction sessions and the ‘ ’ campus tour
  • Adhere to the (online) Learning Agreement
    → Complete courses as planned
    → Make any necessary changes
  • Collect evidence of achievement
    → Have them certified by the relevant lecturer

  • Obtain a Transcript of Records (ToR)
    → Submit your academic records to the International Office at Heidelberg University of Education
    → A summary of your grades will be issued
  • Deregistration with the Foreigners’ Registration Office
    → Before departure
  • Cancel health insurance and bank account if necessary

Once your application has been successful, the International Office will coordinate and support the next steps in your study visit. Information on matters such as accommodation, visas (where required), insurance and the Learning Agreement will be provided in good time.
