Cancer is the second leading cause of premature death in Europe, with nearly three million new cases and over 1.2 million deaths per year in the EU. In response to this, an interdisciplinary training programme for cancer care was launched as part of the European Plan to Combat Cancer, with the aim of improving collaboration between cancer specialists and thereby enhancing patients’ quality of life and well-being.
The European Cancer Organisation (ECO) has recognised the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in cancer treatment and has launched the INTERACT-EUROPE project. This initiative involves 33 partners from 17 countries. The aim is to develop a comprehensive interdisciplinary training programme for cancer, including a curriculum that promotes collaboration between different oncological disciplines.
The project aims to transform the culture of multidisciplinary collaboration in cancer medicine and, ultimately, to improve treatment outcomes for patients. It draws on input from various stakeholders to define interdisciplinary training in oncology, with a focus on collaborative learning to improve the quality of cancer care.

As part of the project, the working group is adopting an approach known as ‘proximal innovation’, which is not about designing course programmes based on the current state of research, but rather about taking the target group’s circumstances into account and, on the basis of empirical findings, selecting an instructional design approach that suits those circumstances. We recently described this concept in a publication.
In collaboration with Goethe University Frankfurt, a Moodle platform was iteratively adapted and further developed to meet the needs of the project and the target group. This included, amongst other things, defining learning pathways and automating certification options. A particular challenge here was the hybrid format of the training programmes. The platform was customised using various plugins and extensions to ensure that the project’s objectives could be met as effectively as possible.
