Have you obtained your school-leaving certificate (university entrance qualification) abroad and are wondering whether you can study at the PH Heidelberg with this certificate?
On this page, you can find out how we check whether your school certificate qualifies you for a degree program and what you need to bear in mind when applying.

Before studying at the Heidelberg University of Education, your foreign school reports will be compared with the German Abitur. For this purpose, the evaluation suggestions of the are taken into account. On the anabin information portal for foreign educational qualifications, you can search for your qualification and find out whether it is comparable with the German Abitur.

If you would like to apply for a degree programme, it must be checked whether your school certificate entitles you to study. Your application therefore consists of 2 steps:

  • Step 1: Application to uni-assist
    at least 8 weeks before the application deadline for your chosen degree programme;
Uni-assist is the employment and service centre for international student applications.
The organisation checks your school report on behalf of the PH Heidelberg.
Uni-assist forwards the result of the check to both you and the PH Heidelberg.
The PH Heidelberg will decide whether you are admitted and enrolled - you will also receive your notification of admission or rejection from us.
Important: Every application to uni:assist is subject to a fee, but you only need to submit one set of application documents.

  • Step 2: Application to the PH Heidelberg
by the application deadline for your chosen degree programme

To the application at the PH Heidelberg

Your school leaving certificate entitles you to study in your home country and is comparable to the German Abitur? Then you will be granted direct access to higher education. It can

  • entitle you to study any subject (like the German Abitur) or
  • only allow you to study a specific range of subjects (subject-specific university entrance qualification).

Your application to your chosen degree programme will then be assessed at the PH Heidelberg: Do you fulfil the admission requirements with your certificate? If yes, your application will take part in the selection procedure and you will receive a notification of admission or rejection to the degree programme.

If your foreign certificate entitles you to study abroad but not in Germany, it is not equivalent to the German Abitur.
In this case, you must pass an assessment test for universities.
This is at the end of a so-called Studienkolleg, which prepares you for studying in Germany with specific courses. And this is how it works:

Step 1: Pass the entrance test
In order to be accepted into a Studienkolleg, you must pass an entrance test to prove that you can follow the lessons in German with understanding. If you do not pass the entrance test, you can be accepted onto a preparatory course (language course) if places are available.
If you can be admitted to the degree programme via the assessment test, the Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences will register you for the Studienkolleg entrance test:

Step 2: Complete the preparatory course and take the assessment test
The preparatory course lasts 2 semesters, but can be shortened to 1 semester or extended by 2 semesters. You take either the specialisation course S or G and take your assessment test at the end of the course.

Step 3: Re-apply and start your degree programme at the PH Heidelberg
You reapply to the PH Heidelberg with the passed assessment test and can start your studies after admission!
