Financial support for internships abroad

Various financial support programmes are available for an internship abroad. The overview shows funding options that can help with the costs of travelling and accommodation or carrying out an internship.

Requirements, application procedures and necessary documents are clearly listed for each programme so that you can quickly check which option suits your planned internship abroad.

Short Term Blended Mobility (STBM)

With Erasmus+ Short Term Blended Mobility (STBM) in the area of internships, students gain international practical experience - in a combination of a short attendance phase and digital learning.

Objective: Funding for recognised 4-week compulsory internships at educational institutions, companies or organisations within the Erasmus+ framework. The internship must be sought by the students themselves. Places are also offered via the internship portal of the International Office.

Compulsory components: Physical mobility (internship duration: max. 30 calendar days) and virtual/digital component (before, during or after; according to the Erasmus+ guidelines, the virtual component must focus on a joint online learning experience and teamwork (p. 20) between you and the internship organisation)

Funding: Basic amount: € 395.00,
plus travelling allowance (depending on the distance to the destination),
plus travelling days,
plus €100.00 top-up for minor opportunities, if applicable

In addition to the basic amount, top-ups can be granted for minor opportunities and travel days :

  1. Top Up "Green Travel" for green travelling: max. 6 travel days;
    for non-environmentally friendly travel: max. 2 travel days
  2. Social Top Up for first-time graduates (€ 100 per month),
  3. Social Top Up for employed students (€100/month),
  4. Social Top Up for students with child(ren) (100,- € / month),
  5. Social Top Up for students with a chronic illness or disability (GdB from 20) (€100/month).

Top Up 2-5: Only one Top Up can be claimed.

Special funding for participants with disabilities (GdB from 50): Useful information on disabled-friendly universities from the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education can be found on the website

Application all year round (as long as funds are available), at the latest 2 months before the start of the internship by e-mail to Mrs Kaya Uhlmann.

Mobility grants are awarded after receipt of the application. The criteria for the approval of mobility grants are

  • Completeness of the application,
  • timely receipt of the application,
  • The validity of the letter of application.

A selection committee decides on the awarding of scholarships based on the written application documents. Equal treatment of all students is guaranteed. There is no legal entitlement to a grant from the Erasmus+ programme.

  • Confirmation from the Centre for Practical School Studies or your degree programme that you have registered for the compulsory internship
  • Letter of motivation with a brief description of the project

Long Term Mobility (LTM)

Erasmus+ Long Term Mobility (LTM) in the area of internships enables students to spend at least two months abroad to deepen their practical knowledge of their studies.

An Erasmus+ long-term internship enables students to gain practical experience in another European country with financial support. The duration is at least two months (60 days). The internship must be sought by the students themselves.

Group 1
(countries with a high cost of living)

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, partner countries (Region 14 - United Kingdom, Switzerland)

750 € per 30 days

Group 2
(countries with a medium cost of living)

Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus

690 € per 30 days

Group 3
(countries with a low cost of living)

Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, North Macedonia, Turkey, Serbia

→ plus travelling expenses (depending on the distance to the destination),
→ plus travelling days,
→ plus top-up for minor opportunities, if applicable

Top-up amounts (Top Ups)

Top ups can be granted in addition to the monthly subsidy instalments:

  1. Top Up "Green Travel" (travel allowance for green travel for up to 6 days of travel, for non-environmentally friendly travel for up to 2 days of travel),
  2. Social Top Up for first-time graduates (€ 250 / month),
  3. Social Top Up for employed students (€ 250 / month),
  4. Social Top Up for students with child(ren) (€250 / month),
  5. Social Top Up for students with a chronic illness or disability (GdB from 20) (€ 250 / month).

Top Up 2-5: Only one Top Up can be claimed.

Special funding for students with disabilities (GdB from 50): Information on universities suitable for the disabled is available on the homepage of the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education (www.european-agency.org).

The application procedure is now open. Applications are possible all year round and must be submitted to the International Office at least 2 months before the start of the internship. Special deadlines apply for stays in England and Wales. Information on this can be found in the English Department.

  • precise details of the target institution and duration of the internship,
  • Indication of whether the internship is compulsory or voluntary
  • Confirmation of internship by the institution
  • current certificate of enrolment

The state of Baden-Württemberg provides various amounts of funding to support students' projects abroad.

Funding (travel allowance) for internships abroad worldwide, usually shorter than 2 months. The internship must be found by the students themselves. The internship portal of the International Office also offers internships.

For internships and study visits that you have sought yourself and that cannot be funded via the Erasmus+, PROMOS or Baden-Württemberg STIPENDIUM programmes. Also possible for the ISP at the German schools in Bogotá, Barranquilla (Colombia) and Quito (Ecuador). Funding depends on the distance to the destination:

up to 1,000 km: € 150.00 (one-off)*
up to 2,000 km: € 300.00 (one-off)*
from 2,001 km: € 500.00 (one-off)*

*Partial scholarships for the stay are awarded subject to availability of funds

30. June 2026 for stays starting from 15 July to 31 December 2026

→ The call for applications for the year 2026 is expected to take place at the beginning of WS 25/26.

Programm zur Steigerung der Mobilität von Studierenden deutscher Hochschulen

The PROMOS programme (Programme to Increase the Mobility of Students at German Universities) is financed by the German Academic Exchange Service with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

  1. Increasing the mobility of students at German universities
  2. Prioritisation of the university's own international mobility
  3. Prioritising and expanding the internationalisation strategy

Funding is available for

  • german students
  • equivalent persons according to § 8 para. 1 no. 2 ff and para. 2 to 3 BAföG and
  • non-German students if they are enrolled in a degree programme at a German university with the aim of obtaining a degree at a German university

Funding can be applied for for an internship in a non-European country lasting at least four weeks (30 days) up to a maximum of six months.

PROMOS supports the stay, but does not arrange internships. You are responsible for finding your own placement.

Stays in regions for which the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel warning.

As a rule, the scholarship includes a one-off travel allowance (depending on the destination country). Depending on the availability of funds, a partial scholarship instalment may be paid for the stay.

The actual amount of funding depends on the budget available to Heidelberg University of Education in the respective funding year and on the destination country. PROMOS does not cover full funding, it is a grant programme.

The funding rates are based exclusively on the country-specific DAAD travel allowances.

15.December for stays commencing from 1 January to 14 July of a calendar year

30.June for stays commencing from 15 July to 31 December of a calendar year

Interested students should submit the application with the declaration of consent by e-mail to Ms Kaya Uhlmann at the International Office by the above-mentioned deadline.

The application form contains a checklist with information on the required documents. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.

A selection committee will decide on the awarding of scholarships on the basis of the written application documents.

  1. Academic achievements at the Heidelberg University of Education (grade point average: at least 2.0),
  2. The purpose of the planned stay for the further course of studies,
  3. relevant language skills required for the successful realisation of the stay (language certificate, not older than two years, usually at least B1 level),
  4. two letters of recommendation from university teachers, which must provide information about the applicant's academic performance (if no grades are available for study-related reasons, only the two letters of recommendation will be considered),
  5. social commitment, participation in academic self-administration,
  6. Recognition of achievements abroad,
  7. Completeness of the application documents.

Criteria 1-4 are categorised by the DAAD as decisive for the funding decision. Information on the status of first-time academics is voluntary. This will be taken into account when assessing the applications.

The call for applications is subject to the approval of funds by the DAAD. There is no legal entitlement to a scholarship.

The "Lehramt.International" programme of the German Academic Exchange Service offers scholarships for internships at schools abroad.

Objective: Self-organised internships abroad for student teachers, scholarships for 1.5 (at least 42 calendar days) to 6-month internships at school institutions abroad

Destination countries: Internships are possible at schools in many countries around the world. The 33 Erasmus programme countries (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey) are excluded as possible target countries.
