In 2018, music lecturer Dr Mathias Schillmöller founded the vocal ensemble PolyPHonics at the Heidelberg University of Education. Students with a passion for the art of a cappella come together here to make music, invent and experiment together in a participatory and democratic style. Inspired by annual festival visits with inspiring coaching from international stars and always on the lookout for exciting, unconventional performance formats, the ensemble quickly grows to around 30 singers. Concerts with Vocal Mystery Tours (2021), gripping Disney spirit (2023), interactive TV chart show (2024) or sensual nature sound theatre (2025) inspire the audience.
Immerse yourself. Feel. Travelling through worlds of sound. Experience adventures with your voice. Creating atmospheres, guiding sound journeys. Pop, jazz, R&B, soul - a cappella - only with our voices. Living together musically, improvising, team spirit, coordinated, amazed, connected, enthusiastic, secure, inspired. Always finding new performance ideas between flash mobs, immersive settings, imaginative total works of art, sound-light baths, rituals and mysterious moments of magic...
Whether students from the PH, other colleges/universities or music-loving non-students - everyone who enjoys singing is welcome to join us!
Once a year there is an audition where we get to know each other. We announce the date on our Instagram channel.
As we organise our concerts as annual projects with the concerts in the summer semester, it is important that applicants sing with us for at least two semesters. That way, we can bring something big to the stage together.
You can find information and insights into the current rehearsals on our Instagram page
