The Media Education Research Workshop is a publication and collaboration project initiated by Professor Thomas Knaus, which, since 2015, has been focusing on an often overlooked aspect of academic work: the discussion of research methods and the research process itself. The publication project therefore focuses not only on the results of studies, but also on the theoretical considerations, methodological deliberations, methodological decisions and practical experiences that shape research in media education. With a freely accessible open-access platform and accompanying print publications, the Media Education Research Workshop offers a concise introduction to and overview of the diversity of research approaches in media education, and invites readers to discover, discuss and further develop both tried-and-tested and innovative methods. Ten years after the first call for contributions, the project is now being continued with new workshop contributions.
The "Research Workshop in Media Education" is a long-term collaboration and publication project that documents and reflects on the current state of research in media education. The project aims to highlight the various epistemological and methodological approaches within the discipline, stimulate methodological discussions, and provide early career researchers with practical guidance and orientation. The project focuses on systematically collecting and presenting research approaches, methods, and techniques used in media education projects to advance knowledge in the field. These "methodological treasures" are published in two formats: an openly accessible online repository and print volumes published by the publishing house kopaed (Munich). This dual publication strategy makes the spectrum of creative and innovative methods visible and ensures their long-term availability for research, teaching, and practice.
The project has three main goals. First, it contributes to critical discussions about the possibilities and limitations of traditional research approaches and methods in media education. Second, it encourages engagement with innovative and creative methodological perspectives and makes them accessible to a broad academic audience. Finally, it provides early-career researchers, in particular, with methodological and theoretical guidance by documenting and openly sharing examples and reflections from completed research projects.
The first three volumes, published between 2017 and 2019, were based on a 2015 call for papers and established an initial collection of contributions. To continue documenting, developing, and critically reflecting on the methodological diversity of media education, the project is now being extended with new calls and subsequent publications—ten years after the first call.
